About

The Fort Wayne Lawn Bowls Club was created to provide the City of Fort Wayne and surrounding communities the ability to play a sport very similar to Curling in the summer months when Curling is not available.

Lawn Bowls is a perfect complement to Curling due to the similarities in the sports and the nearly opposite season.

What is Lawn Bowls?

Lawn bowls (or bowls) is a precision sport where players roll biased (asymmetrical) balls, known as bowls, on a grass or synthetic surface to get as close as possible to a small white or yellow ball called the "jack". The goal is to land bowls closer to the jack than the opponent, requiring strategy to navigate the curved path of the bowls.

Key Aspects of Lawn Bowls:

  • The Objective: Score points by placing your bowls closer to the jack than your opponent's nearest bowl at the end of each round ("end").

  • The Equipment: Players use "bowls" (or woods), which are, despite the name, typically made of hard resin and are not perfectly round. They have a "bias"—one side is slightly flattened—which causes the bowl to curve as it slows down.

  • The Surface (Green): Games are played on a finely manicured, flat, and square surface called a "green," which is divided into rectangular lanes known as "rinks".

  • Gameplay: A mat is placed, and players take turns rolling their bowls toward the jack, which has been tossed to the opposite end of the rink. Players can knock the jack or opponent’s bowls to improve their own position.

  • Formats: The game can be played as individuals (singles), or in teams of pairs, triples, or fours.

  • Competition: It is a strategic, social, and competitive sport played globally by people of all ages.

It is different from bocce, which uses perfectly round balls on a shorter court and is often thrown underhand rather than rolled with a bias.
